Birthday Party Food Menu at Home: 4 Easy Menus for Kids and Adults

Book My Cook · 4 November 2026 · 3 min read

A birthday at home is the best kind of party: your people, your music, no restaurant rushing you out at 11. The only problem is the kitchen. Someone ends up frying pakodas while everyone else sings Happy Birthday.

Here are four birthday menus that work at home, how much to make, and a simple timeline so the person celebrating isn't the person cooking.

Before you pick a menu

  • Who's coming? Mostly kids, mostly adults, or both? Kids want food they recognise. Adults want something that feels special.
  • What time? An evening party from 5 to 8 needs snacks and a light meal. A dinner from 8 onwards needs a full spread.
  • Veg, non-veg or mixed? With mixed groups, keep at least one starter and one main vegetarian, and keep them on separate serving spoons.
  • The cake decides the dessert. If there's a big cake, one small dessert is plenty.

Menu 1: Kids' birthday party (15–20 kids, plus parents)

Keep it finger food that's easy to eat while running around.

  • Starters: mini aloo tikki, cheese corn balls, veg spring rolls
  • Main: pav bhaji, or mini pizzas, or veg noodles
  • For the parents: paneer tikka and a pot of chai
  • Dessert: the cake, plus fruit custard

Tip: Children eat less than you expect and get distracted fast. Count two children as one adult, and serve the main course before the cake, not after.

Menu 2: Family birthday dinner (15–25 guests, vegetarian)

The classic North Indian spread that pleases dadi and the cousins equally.

  • Starters: paneer tikka, hara bhara kebab
  • Mains: shahi paneer or kadai paneer, dal makhani, a dry sabzi (jeera aloo or mix veg)
  • Rice and breads: jeera rice, butter naan or tandoori roti
  • Sides: boondi raita, green salad
  • Dessert: gulab jamun or moong dal halwa

Menu 3: Non-veg birthday feast (20–30 guests)

For the crowd that judges a party by its butter chicken.

  • Starters: chicken tikka or malai tikka, plus paneer tikka for the vegetarians
  • Mains: butter chicken, dal makhani, one paneer dish
  • Rice: chicken biryani or jeera rice
  • Breads: butter naan or laccha paratha
  • Sides: raita, onion salad with lemon
  • Dessert: phirni or gulab jamun

Menu 4: Light evening birthday (10–15 adults)

For a relaxed evening with drinks and conversation, where nobody wants a heavy dinner.

  • Chaat counter: papdi chaat, dahi bhalla
  • Snacks: chilli paneer or chilli chicken, veg manchurian
  • Something filling: mini kathi rolls or a small pot of pulao
  • Dessert: the cake, plus rasmalai

How much to make

A quick rule of thumb for a dinner: 6–8 starter pieces per person, about 120–150 g of each main curry when there are two, about 150 g of cooked rice and 2–3 rotis per person. Our food quantity chart for 20, 30 and 50 guests has the full numbers.

A timeline that keeps you out of the kitchen

  • Two days before: fix the menu and guest count, and buy dry groceries.
  • The day before: buy paneer, chicken, curd and fresh vegetables. Clear fridge space.
  • Morning of the party: marinate tikkas, make the dessert, soak dal and rice.
  • 3–4 hours before guests arrive: gravies, dal and rice on the stove.
  • As guests arrive: starters straight off the tawa or out of the oven.
  • At dinner time: naan or rotis made fresh, everything else reheated and served.

The hard part is that last stretch, when starters, rotis and serving all need someone at the gas at once, right when you want to be cutting the cake.

Have a chef cook the birthday menu

With BMC Feast for birthdays, you choose your menu dish by dish, set the number of guests and see the price before you pay. A verified chef is assigned well before the day and shares the ingredient list for your menu. On the day, the chef arrives ahead of serving time, cooks everything fresh in your kitchen and leaves the cooking area clean. You can book for 1 to 100 guests, at least 12 hours ahead.
